The supermarket

I do online shopping for my groceries each week now… for good reason

There was a time when I used to love going to the supermarket and being able to browse the isles, picking up additional odds and ends, grabbing bargains and reduced items. There were days when I loved the ‘big shop’ and we would go and buy tasty  morsels. It would be the time when the house would be crammed full of goodies and you would splurge on things you didn’t need.

I distinctly remember this came to an end about 4 years ago (maybe longer?) when I was shopping in a supermarket that was not my usual local store. It was about a 20 to 30 minute drive away from home.

I think I might have gotten about half way through the list when I realised that I had totally run out of steam. I can still remember now the feeling of trying to pull the trolley around the corners as it filled with shopping. The trolley was getting heavier and harder to steer, and wheels were playing their dirty tricks on me (you know the ones), spinning in all different directions other than the ones that you want to go. I was getting weaker and weaker and had hit the fatigue brick wall of doom.

I was genuinely defeated – so I sat on the floor and gave up. I don’t know if that has ever happened to you, but I personally find it really embarrassing when my body decides to act like a child and just decides to stop working on me in public places (like in the street in town, or whilst waiting in a queue at the bank…) Luckily in this instance a really nice lady took pity on me and got me a drink and a chair, so I did recover just about enough to try and finish the shopping and just about managed to get home safely. BUT – the shopping took me FOUR hours.

After that day I vowed that I would never go grocery shopping again! I nip into the shops and pick up bits… but that was the last time I did a ‘big shop’ and is the reason I do my shopping online!
